Ukraine and EU Sign Memorandum for Hydrogen Corridor

⚡ A major step towards integrating Ukraine into European energy value chains and enhancing energy security was taken with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the “Ukraine–EU Hydrogen Corridor.” This initiative, led by Gas TSO of Ukraine and key European companies, aims to establish a complete hydrogen value chain connecting Ukraine with Central Europe.

The MOU, signed by organizations such as Stadtwerke München GmbH , Wien Energie GmbH, OpenGrid Europe, bayernets GmbH, NET4GAS HR, eustream, a.s., and others, focuses on using Ukraine’s renewable energy resources to produce hydrogen. The hydrogen will then be transported via repurposed pipelines through Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Germany, ensuring competitive green hydrogen supplies by 2030.

👉 This effort builds on the 2023 EU-Ukraine Strategic Partnership on Biomethane, Hydrogen, and other Synthetic Gases and discussions at the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC) in Berlin. It strengthens Ukraine’s role as a key energy partner while promoting job creation, economic growth, and a shift to sustainable energy.

The Ukraine–EU Hydrogen Corridor will leverage existing pipeline infrastructure, adapting it for hydrogen transport. A technical feasibility study for repurposing parts of the pipeline network is planned within 12–18 months, ensuring timely progress on this long-term project.

👉 Support from European partners underscores the corridor’s importance. Dr. Matthias Jenn, CEO of bayernets GmbH, highlighted its role in supplying hydrogen to Central Europe’s industrial hubs, while Dimitar Enchev, CEO of CWP Europe, emphasized Ukraine’s recovery as a resilient energy hub.
“This project signals Ukraine’s potential as a cost-competitive clean energy supplier, addressing critical challenges in Europe and fostering Ukraine’s green recovery after the war,” said Julia Reinaud, Senior Director – Europe at Breakthrough Energy.
