Poland’s Economic Success and Future Challenges: Insights from the IMF

27-01-25

🚀 Over the last two decades, Poland has achieved remarkable economic growth, nearly doubling the size of its economy. Real GDP per capita has risen from below 50% of the EU27 average to approximately 80%, making Poland the 20th largest global economy in real terms. These achievements highlight the success of Poland’s economic strategy and its rapid convergence with wealthier EU nations.

👉 The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently noted that Poland’s short-term economic outlook is positive, bolstered by recovering private consumption and the unlocking of funds from the EU’s NextGenerationEU program. Inflation is showing signs of moderation, supported by a firm monetary policy, and is expected to trend further downward, provided that prudent fiscal policies remain in place.

👉 Long-Term Risks and Structural Challenges
However, the IMF report underscores several risks that could hinder Poland’s longer-term economic stability. Fiscal deficits are expected to remain elevated due to increased defense spending, with public debt projected to rise from 50% to 65% of GDP by 2029. While the risk of sovereign debt distress is currently low, such trends point to the need for fiscal adjustments to ensure debt sustainability.

👉 Poland’s growth engines are also under pressure. The competitive advantages that fueled past economic success—such as low labor costs and a young workforce—are diminishing. Challenges such as an aging population, limited capital investment, declining cost-competitiveness, and subdued growth among key trading partners pose significant hurdles to future prosperity.

👉 IMF Recommendations for Sustained Growth
To address these challenges, the IMF has emphasized the need for reforms aimed at deepening capital markets, fostering innovation, ensuring an adequate labor supply, and improving resource allocation. By adopting these measures, Poland can maintain its economic momentum and continue its path of convergence with more developed economies.
