Signs of Revival Amid War: Investing in Ukraine Before the Conflict Ends

08-11-24

Despite the ongoing conflict, Ukraine’s economy is showing remarkable signs of resilience, attracting foreign investment at an increasing pace. In the first nine months of 2024, 36 mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in Ukraine reached a total value of $643 million, with an average deal value rising from $27 million last year to $38 million. This data signals renewed optimism among investors who are eager to tap into high-reward opportunities now, rather than waiting until the conflict ends.

Foreign investment, mainly from North America and Europe, has notably risen. Key deals include Saudi investment firm SALIC's acquisition of a 12.6% stake in agri-tech leader MHP SE for $54 million, and French billionaire Xavier Niel’s NJJ Capital purchasing Lifecell and merging it with Datagroup-Volia, marking Ukraine’s largest M&A deal in a decade. These deals highlight investor interest in robust, established sectors like technology and agriculture, while sectors closer to the frontlines remain dormant.

Technology has emerged as a prime sector, attracting $290 million across six major deals, with IT company Creatio’s $200 million funding round leading the way. This underscores the tech industry’s unique resilience due to its remote work capabilities, which have enabled continued operations amid disruptions. Confidence in Ukraine’s IT sector appears strong, with the potential to drive further growth.

Ukrainian companies are also expanding globally, making 10 outbound deals worth $55 million this year, the highest since the pandemic. Energy giant DTEK’s acquisition of Columbus Energy in Poland for $32.4 million exemplifies the ambition of Ukrainian businesses to pursue green energy projects and align with EU standards. Meanwhile, the domestic M&A scene has been bolstered by privatization efforts, with high-profile sales like Hotel Ukraina and UMCC-Titanium attracting local investors and supporting state budgets.

The revival of Ukraine’s business landscape sends a strong message to the global investment community: the time to act is now. As these early movers demonstrate, taking the first step may secure a significant advantage in a post-war economy that is gearing up for transformation.
