The name of Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv (Київ), holds deep historical and cultural significance. In Ukrainian, it’s written Київ (Kyiv), while in Russian, it’s Киев (Kiev). The international use of “Kiev,” based on Russian pronunciation, is a legacy of imperial and Soviet dominance. Since Ukraine’s independence in 1991, promoting the correct form, Kyiv, has been crucial for affirming Ukrainian identity and sovereignty.
🌱 Kyiv: The Cradle of Rus’ Civilization 🌱
Kyiv was the heart of Kyivan Rus’, the medieval state that shaped the history of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. In the 10th century, Kyiv became the political, cultural, and spiritual center of Rus’. It was here, in 988, that Prince Volodymyr the Great adopted Christianity, making Kyiv the cradle of Eastern Slavic civilization.
By contrast, Moscow was a small provincial settlement in Zalesye ("beyond the woods"), far removed from Kyiv’s influence. The region’s name reflected its isolation amidst dense forests. In the early medieval period, Moscow played no significant role in Rus’.
😑 Moscow’s Rise Under Mongol Rule 😑
Moscow rose to prominence in the 13th century, following the Mongol invasion of Rus’ (1237–1240), which devastated Kyiv. Moscow’s rulers submitted to the Mongols and secured the yarlyk, a charter granting them authority to collect taxes on behalf of the Mongol Khans. Acting as the Mongols’ tax collectors allowed Moscow to grow wealthy and dominate other Rus’ principalities.

Despite its hardships, Kyiv remains the historical and cultural heart of Rus’. In Polish tradition, it’s known as Kijów and was the capital of the Kijów Voivodeship during the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, emphasizing its importance in Central European history.
